DOOR HARDWARE BASICS

A latch is the mechanism that slides into the edge of the door and retracts or protrudes with the turn of the doorknob or lever. The latch keeps the door closed and allows it to open.

Read our Hardware 101 A-Z Glossary.

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the hole for your lever or knob.

Read our Hardware 101 A-Z Glossary.

A strike plate is the metal piece attached to the door jamb – part of the door frame. As the door closes, the latch mechanism strikes the plate mounted to the jamb and the strike plate catches the mechanism and holds the door closed.

Read our Hardware 101 A-Z Glossary.

Handing describes the side of the door the hinges are on when the door is opening towards you. To determine the handing you need, always stand on the outside of the door:

1/ | If the hinges are on the left hand side, you will need to order a right hand dummy set.
2 | If the hinges are on the right hand side, you will need to order a left hand dummy set.

Majority of our levers are non-handed meaning they can installed on both sides.

Read our Hardware 101 A-Z Glossary.

Required door thickness depends on the product but most of our hardware is suitable for 32-40mm doors. The standard thickness of the door in Australia is 35 mm.

For rebated double doors you might have to use a rebate kit to install our hardware.

Lever or knob entrance sets have key cylinder inside the lever or knob.

Combination set consists of a key-in- lever or key-in-knob entrance set and a matching deadbolt that can be installed above the lever. Consider the combination set for added security and a peace of mind.

DOOR HARDWARE SELECTION

It’s recommended that exterior doors are secured with a deadbolt that has a key cylinder.

You can have a single and double cylinder depending on your needs. For more security, consider the double cylinder deadbolt, with key on both sides. For more convenience, go with the single cylinder deadbolt which has a thumbturn on the internal side.

At Gainsborough we offer a range of deadbolts to match your other hardware. Visit this page to learn more.

We don't offer samples of our finishes. To view our products, you are welcome to visit selection centres - Gallerie in Port Melbourne, VIC or Build and Design Centre in South Brisbane, QLD.
