How to select a product: Choosing your door hardware

Step 1. Decide what function you require for your door

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the door hardware for a front or rear door that needs to be locked and unlocked with the use of a key.  This is often referred to as an entrance set and typically comes in either single or double cylinder options.
  • Is the door hardware required for a room that you would like to be able to lock, such as a bathroom or study.  This functionality is referred to as privacy.
  • Is the door hardware for a door that has no locking function, such as a laundry or bedroom.  This is known as passage.
  • Finally we have the dummy function available – non-operational door hardware that is used on wardrobes and cupboards.

Step 2. Decide what style of door hardware best suits your home

There are many styles of door hardware choices available ranging from knobs to levers to pull handles to electronic access.

If you like modern designs, look for simple and clean lines. Or for the more classic designs, ornate door hardware may be preferred.

Depending on the style of your home, some prefer door knobs, while others like door levers.  Levers can be chosen as sometimes these are easier to open for people with disabilities, elderly and children.

After you have chosen the style, finish becomes an important decision. Satin Chrome, Bright Chrome, Stainless Steel or Polished Stainless Steel are popular in the Australian market, but again, depending on the style of your home, you may consider Bright Gold as an option.

Finishes are normally chosen based on the other finishes throughout your home and can be used to create the finishing touch.

Step 3. Consider the environment

If you live near the ocean, then your door hardware has to be able to withstand the elements.

Look for premium materials like stainless steel that are salt resistant and will stand up to the test of time.

No matter where you are located, your door hardware needs to be long lasting and remain operable for as long as you need it to.
